It will be a welcome return back to Philadelphia for the Flyers.
An unlikely playoff berth has now turned into an even more unexpected lead in a first-round NHL Stanley Cup playoff series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
See how the Flyers have gone ahead of the cross-state rivals and take the momentum back to Philly.
The Flyers head back to Philadelphia with a 2-0 series lead after securing 3-0 victory over the Penguins in Game 2 of a first round matchup at PPG PAINTS Arena in Pittsburgh on April 20.
After a scoreless first period, the Flyers got on the scoreboard with a goal by rookie Porter Martone — second of the series for the 19-year-old winger. Soon after, Philadelphia scored a shorthanded goal by forward Garnet Hathaway on a feed from winger Owen Tippett.
In the third, Flyers center Luke Glendening capped off the victory with an empty-net goal.
With the game in hand, the last minute plus of play included a scrum between the two teams along with the ejection of Penguins players Kris Letang and Anthony Mantha each receiving 10-minute misconduct penalties.
Flyers goalie Dan Vladar was spectacular throughout the game, standing on his head for the first two periods that saw the Penguins throw a barrage of shots at the goaltender.
Vladar silenced Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust in the third, making a total of 27 saves in the game to earn his first career playoff shutout.
After scoring his first career playoff goal in Game 1, Martone made history with his second in as many games.
With his goal in Game 2, Martone (19 years, 176 days) became the sixth youngest player to record a goal in each of his first two Stanley Cup playoff games of his career.
Game 3: April 22, at Xfinity Mobile Arena in Philadelphia, 7 p.m. (ESPN/NBCSP)
The Flyers finished the season 42-27-12 and clinched the eighth seed, while the Penguins finished 41-24-16, good for second in the Metropolitan Division.
The two teams split the season series 2-2. Here's a look at the previous matchups:
It's been a rough patch recently for the historically successful franchise as it finally earned a playoff berth for the first time in more than a half decade.
The last time the Flyers were fighting for the Stanley Cup was during the 2019-2020 season, when they were knocked out in seven games of the second round by New York Islanders.
The last time the Penguins made the playoffs was in the 2021-2022 season.
The Flyers and Penguins have a lengthy and notable playoff history.
This will be the eighth meeting between the cross-state rivals, with the last matchup coming in 2018 when the Penguins defeated the Flyers in six games in the first round.
In 2008 the Pens beat the Flyers in five games in the Eastern Conference Finals before losing the Stanley Cup Final to the Red Wings. The following season, they defeated the Flyers in the conference quarterfinals before winning the Stanley Cup.
The Flyers were victorious in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals in 2012, 2000 and in 1997 when the team lost to the Red Wings in the Cup finals.
The first matchup came during the 1989 Patrick Division Finals, which the Flyers won in seven games.
