It’s been a month of blockbuster trades for Browns and Bucks owner Jimmy Haslam. In the span of just a few weeks, Haslam traded Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams and now Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat.
Garrett and Antetokounmpo are two of the biggest stars in their respective sports, and Haslam’s teams are now without both players heading into next season.
It turns out, Haslam was influenced by his previous dealings with Garrett when deciding whether to take the Heat’s offer for Giannis, or the Celtics’. They were two different packages, with the Heat offering more assets for the future, while the Celtics would’ve given up a proven star in Jaylen Brown.
According to Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports, Haslam took the Heat deal because he didn’t want to risk Brown asking for a trade the way Garrett and Antetokounmpo did from their respective teams.
It's been widely reported that the Browns refused to trade Garrett unless they were getting an established player in return. That player was Jared Verse, who was the centerpiece of the Rams' trade with the Browns.
Cleveland demanded Verse (and more) in exchange for Garrett, but the Rams were reluctant to give up their young pass rusher until the very end of the negotiations. One would've thought Haslam would have wanted another established star like Jaylen Brown after acquiring Verse for Cleveland, but he opted to steer clear of another potentially unhappy star on his teams.
