The Bill Belichick Hall of Fame vote that left the legendary head coach out on his first ballot is an absolute head-scratcher. As our Christian D'Andrea wrote, if Belichick isn't a first ballot HoFer, then no one is.

So what happened? Per ESPN's Seth Wickersham and Don Van Natta Jr., the two cheating scandals that Belichick had on his resume -- that would be Spygate from 2007 and Deflategate from 2015 -- were part of the discussion.

The focus, per Wickrsham and Van Natta, was on Bill Polian, the ex-GM of the Indianapolis Colts. They reported that Polian said Belichick should "wait a year" to be let into Canton.

Polian spoke with the reporters, denying that claim. But there's this:

Polian added that he could not remember with 100% certainty if he voted for Belichick, saying he was 95% sure he voted for the coach and a player, "most likely" L.C. Greenwood.

"I was shocked to learn Bill didn't get in," Polian said. "He deserves to be in the Hall of Fame."

Now, look. Polian is 83 years old. Maybe he did really forget. But wouldn't you think he'd remember if he voted for Belichick or not? And if he doesn't remember, isn't that concerning for someone voting on the Hall of Fame committee?

This whole thing is just absurd and proof this process needs transparency or a change.
