PHOENIX, AZ -- The Arizona Diamondbacks today announced that they have
exercised the option on manager Bob Brenly that will keep him at the helm
through at least the 2004 season. The second manager in franchise history,
Brenly has led the Diamondbacks to consecutive National League Western
Division titles in each of his first two seasons, including a World Series
championship in his rookie year at the helm in 2001.
Brenly, 49, has compiled a 190-134 record since accepting the managerial
role on October 30, 2000, for a .586 winning percentage. In defeating the
New York Yankees for the 2001 World Series crown, Brenly became just the
fourth manager in history to win a Fall Classic with no previous managerial
experience, the first since Ralph Houk guided the Yankees to the 1961 title.
A catcher during his playing days with San Francisco and Toronto, Brenly is
one of nine former receivers who are managing in the majors this year. The
others include Bruce Bochy (San Diego), Bob Boone (Cincinnati), Bob Melvin
(Seattle), Tony Pena (Kansas City), Mike Scioscia (Anaheim), Jeff Torborg
(Florida), Joe Torre (New York Yankees) and Ned Yost (Milwaukee).
