The Arizona Diamondbacks made a very notable roster move before Friday's series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

According to Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic, first baseman Pavin Smith was designated for assignment.

Smith, 30, couldn't muster enough offensive momentum for the D-Backs to consider having him stick around.

In 28 games this season, the left-handed hitter managed a poor .141/.236/.192 slash line with just one homer and a .428 OPS.

The seven-year veteran underwent surgery in April to remove loose bodies from his left elbow, potentially affecting his bat.

"D-Backs first basemen have an overall .210/.253/.303 slash line across 366 plate appearances," Anthony Franco of MLB Trade Rumors wrote. "It’s their most obvious area to address if they buy at the deadline, preferably with a left-handed bat."

Carlos Santana began the season with the D-Backs, but he didn't last long with the NL West club due to struggles at the plate and a groin injury.

Replacing Smith on Arizona's active roster is rookie outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt.
