The German Football League (DFL) has appointed Benjamin Schmedes as executive vice president sports.

Schmedes, 41, is currently director of professional football at Danish club Brøndby and previously was SV Hamburg chief scout and managing director for sport at Osnabrück.

"Benjamin Schmedes impressed us with his strong expertise, his perspective on German and international football, and his clear focus on the sporting priorities of the Bundesliga and the clubs," DFL CEO marc Lenz said.

"Together, we will intensify the sporting work of the DFL and the clubs as a key foundation for the future competitiveness of German football.”

The DFL wants to intensify its sporting development and cooperation with the clubs through the appointment, including the support of top talents in the youth and transitional areas.

The 36 DFL clubs agreed on Tuesday to set up an under-21 league from next season onwards.
