The German Football League (DFL) and China Media Group (CMG) agreed to continue their long-standing partnership on Wednesday during German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's visit to Beijing.

Both sides signed a joint memorandum of understanding to extend their TV contract and also agreed on further areas of cooperation, including the promotion of young football talent.

The agreement was signed by DFL managing director Steffen Merkel and CMG president Shen Haixiong. Chancellor Merz and Chinese Premier Li Qiang were also present at the signing, according to the DFL, which runs the Bundesliga and German second division.

CMG is the largest national media group in China and reaches billions of viewers with its programming. The group's television station CCTV first broadcast Bundesliga matches in 1995.

CMG holds the broadcasting rights to Bundesliga matches in China until the end of the 2027/28 season. A continuation of the partnership is now considered very likely.

The Chinese market has been of great interest to German football for years. The DFL opened an office in Beijing in 2019 and several Bundesliga clubs, such as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, are also permanently active in China.
