When the Seattle Seahawks signed superstar wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba to an extension in March, fans expected fellow 2023 first-round pick Devon Witherspoon to follow suit. Fast forward nearly two months later and that has not happened. Witherspoon and the Seahawks aren't close on an extension, according to a recent report by Brady Henderson.

Ironically enough, the Witherspoon-Seahawks extension may be delayed by Seattle's Super Bowl 60 opponent, the New England Patriots. The Patriots have cornerback Christian Gonzalez who is also eligible for a contract extension. Both sides are possibly waiting for the other to set the market.

Furthermore, both Gonzalez and Witherspoon are represented by the same player representation agency, WIN Sports Group. Surely they are attempting to secure market-setting deals for both Gonzalez and Witherspoon. Which contract is negotiated first feels like a game of Chess.

The Seahawks don't begin training camp for roughly two additional months. That's typically when general manager John Schneider signs his players to contract extensions. That means there's plenty of time to get Witherspoon signed before it becomes an actual topic of discussion and possible distraction. The Witherspoon deal hasn't come together as quickly as Smith-Njigba's did, proving it's far more complicated than expected.
