Victor Wembanyama is not solely what the San Antonio Spurs are building around. Coach Mitch Johnson knows that they are only as good in the NBA Playoffs if other guys like Devin Vassell and Carter Bryant play their absolute best. It is also not just their head coach who shares that philosophy. Spurs President of Basketball Operations Gregg Popovich also helps out in executing those beliefs in and out of the court.
Bryant and Vassell unveil how Coach Popovich serves as perfect Spurs life coach
Coach Gregg Popovich was always a proponent of having a great life on and off the court. He used to go out a lot alongside Tim Duncan and give advice to greats like Manu Ginobili. This has not at all changed when it comes to the current iteration of the Spurs led by Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs President of Basketball Operations even gave some much-needed advice to Devin Vassell for his affairs on and off the court, via Jared Weiss of The Athletic.
"At the end of the day, he’s always giving you feedback, and he’s telling you the truth and honesty. That’s what you need to hear because it’s a lot of BS that might go around. But you need to hear the truth, you need to hear what’s going on, and he’ll do that for sure.”I think that’s one big thing, respecting the game and not taking any of this for granted," the Spurs guard said "And just with life, he’s taught me so much stuff off the court, whether it’s family or giving back in the community, he’s always had that at his forefront, and I appreciate him for that."
Advice from Coach Popovich is also not limited to just Spurs veterans too. Carter Bryant has been getting valuable insights from the decorated coach on a constant basis. He even noted how different Coach Popovich was from how his portrayal in media.
"He’s speaking life into you. A lot of times, there’s some things you need to hear from different people. Sometimes it clicks when it’s not the constant voice that you’re hearing for 82 games out of the year. It’s funny because you hear the stories about him being tough on guys and, obviously, he’s not my head coach, so I don’t kind of get that same experience. But I’m like, ‘What are you talking about?’ This dude is the sweetest, nicest guy. He’s dope," the Spurs rookie said.
There are a lot of Spurs players who benefit from having Coach Popovich on their side. They are very lucky because he is not just a great leader in the NBA Playoffs but an outstanding wise mentor of life.
