Scott Bordow at azcentral sports did an excellent article about what a Devin Booker extension might look like. Here is what Booker's contract might look like if he signed a five year extension. Booker is eligible for such an extension next summer.

Here’s how it would work: A five-year extension would kick in starting with the 2019-20 season (Phoenix would pick up its team option on Booker for the 2018-19 season).

Booker’s salary could be 25 percent of the salary cap, which is projected to be $108 million in 2019-20. (Booker could earn 30 percent of the cap if he makes an All-NBA team or is named Defensive Player of the Year.)

His first-year salary, using the 25 percent benchmark, would be $27 million. Assuming he receives the maximum eight percent raise each year based on the first-year salary, the five-year deal would be worth $156.6 million.

The annual salaries:

  • 2019-20: $27 million
  • 2020-21: $29.16 million
  • 2021-22: $31.320 million
  • 2022-23: $33.480 million
  • 2023-24: $35.640 million

Asked about a possible extension for Booker, Managing General Partner Robert Sarver said, “I’m not going to answer that.” But, he added, “Devin is working on his game and he’s determined to take his game to the next level. I would love to be in a position to do that.”

Booker says he loves playing here and plans to be here for a long time.

I sort of wish Sarver was more enthusiastic in his response but it is early in the process.

It's good to see what Booker's contract might look like if he signs an extension.

At this point is Booker a max guy? He's inconsistent offensively and non-existent defensively, so this is going to be tough for McD.

Oh absolutely he is a max guy. I cannot believe this is even a question. His accomplishments in this league by this young age put him among the elites. This is one of the easiest decisions McD will ever make.

BTW. Not sure I would characterize his offense as inconsistent.

Well let me rephrase...I think he's a max guy for the Suns, but would he be a max player for a contending team? I guess that's where I was getting at. And you're probably right with his offense... at his age averaging 22 ppg is impressive, so I'll take back the inconsistent aspect lol

Yeah, when you have a 20 year old (will be 21 when he signs the extension) who's scoring prowess at that age has historically only been matched by hall of famers... you give him the extension.

Its just nice to have a player where its a no-brainer. Its the questionable big men that are frustrating.

Bleacher report best players under 25. Do you agree with the rankings?

1. Anthony Davis
2. Giannis
3. Kyrie
4. KAT
5. Embiid
6. Porzingis
7. Jokic
8. Beal
9. Drummond
10. Wiggins
11. Steven Adams
12. Jabari
13. Gobert
14. Schroder
15. Harrions Barnes
16. Devin Booker
17. LaVine
18. Randle
19. Myles Turner
20. Kanter
21. Tobias Harris
22. Otto Porter
23. Oladipo
24. DeAngelo

IMO, Wiggins is rated too high, along with Barnes and Schroder.

Go to Bleacher Report. Seems I can't attach a simple link any more

There are maybe only 6 players ranked above Booker that I'd trade him for.

Of course Booker is a max guy. People forget that he is only 20 years old. He plays like a 25 year-old already.
Also, that list is pure crap. Giannis, KAT for sure. AD and Embid when they are healthy, but I am not sold that either one of them can be healthy for very long. I may take a gamble on Davis, but probably not. Wiggins is intriguing, but I think Booker is a much smarter player, and I have a feeling he will develop certain skills Wiggins will never have.
Porzingis and Jokic are very interesting due to their size, but I am not sure I would take either of them for Booker straight-up.

Booker is a max player for any NBA team if he progresses as expected.

He is untouchable in my book.

We're definitely locking him up on a max deal. I'd like to see better efficiency on offense, but his scoring ability is elite. He also has all the intangibles, including leadership, confidence, and BB IQ that the best player on a championship team needs to possess. His defense must improve but he doesn't lack effort. He will be 21 at the end of the month and already projects as a Suns all-timer. If JJ turns into something special, we will have two young cornerstones and can start adding pieces to make us contenders.

I don't think it's a question of if he deserves a max contract or not just a matter of when he signs it. It'll be great to have him locked in long term. I know we can offer him a 5 year max deal the year before he's set to become a RFA but will that 5 years be added to the 1 or is it just 5 years in total?

It should be added to the current contract. TJ for instance got a 4 year extension this summer and it was 4 years added after this season.

Sharing the ball with Bledsoe and Jackson should help him get his assists up over 4 though while also leading to fewer poor shots.

I got a good feeling about Jackson so far. It's true, I do. Mike and Pip. Alex, be Cartwright.
