The Detroit Tigers are in a rain delay.

The Tigers and Boston Red Sox entered a rain delay in the top of the eighth inning Monday, May 4, in the opener of a three-game series at Comerica Park. The game started 30 minutes ahead of schedule, at 6:10 p.m., in an attempt to avoid the rain, but the rain came anyway.

The grounds crew rolled the tarp onto the field at 8:15 p.m.

At the time of the delay, the Tigers were losing 5-2 to the Red Sox after allowing five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Left-hander Tarik Skubal was supposed to start Monday's game, but he landed on the injured list with loose bodies in his left elbow, requiring surgery.

Instead of Skubal, right-hander Ty Madden pitched as a bulk reliever in his arrival from Triple-A Toledo – following left-handed reliever Tyler Holton, who completed the first inning. Madden delivered five scoreless innings out of the bullpen, only for right-handed reliever Ricky Vanasco and left-handed reliever Enmanuel De Jesus to implode in the seventh inning.

The Tigers entered with an 18-17 record.
