The Detroit Tigers placed right-handed reliever Beau Brieske on the 15-day injured list Friday with ankle inflammation that was exacerbated by an incident that occurred on the mound last week in Minnesota.

Brieske received a cortisone injection in his right ankle and will begin rehabilitation over the weekend. In a corresponding move, the Tigers recalled right-hander Brenan Hanifee from Triple-A Toledo.

Brieske pitched the seventh inning of Thursday’s 6-1 home win over the Kansas City Royals. He gave up one run on two hits and a walk.

“It's gone on, on and off, very manageable,” manager A.J. Hinch said before Friday’s game against the Royals at Comerica Park. “And then I think that play in Minnesota, you know, made it a little bit worse.

“Yeah, this has been something that's plagued him a little bit. He's pitched through it. He's been fine. And then he was pretty sore after the Minnesota stumble off the mound, and then, so we gave him like four or five days off."

Hinch said Brieske underwent tests Friday, with doctors saying to shut him down.

"Hopefully it'll be quick, but you never know until things settle," Hinch said.

The team also got some mildly encouraging news about the injury progression of centerfielder Parker Meadows, who has been cleared to start a return to play throwing program.

Meadows was placed on the 60-day injured list right before the season after he suffered an injury to the musculocutaneous nerve in his right bicep during the first spring training game on a throw.

“Yeah, I mean obviously it's a step forward, you know?” Hinch said. “I will look forward to seeing more and more positive reviews of him playing catch, similar to (Matt) Vierling playing catch.

“They’re at different stages, but we need that to happen before we get into the next phase of rehab. So kind of cross your fingers at this, you know, initiating this throwing program can build a foundation to start to go faster.”

Meadows will be on the injured list until at least May 23.
