The Detroit Red Wings continued to add organizational depth on Saturday, signing forward Chase Stillman to a one-year, two-way contract.
According to ESPN, the deal will pay Stillman $850,000 at the NHL level if he earns a spot on Detroit’s roster. The 23-year-old became an unrestricted free agent after the Vancouver Canucks chose not to extend him a qualifying offer ahead of free agency.
Stillman entered professional hockey with high expectations after being selected 29th overall by the New Jersey Devils in the 2021 NHL Draft.
While he has yet to make his NHL debut, the physical winger has spent the past several seasons developing in the American Hockey League. Across stops with affiliates of the Devils, Canucks, and Pittsburgh Penguins, Stillman has totaled 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points in 105 career AHL games.
The one-year deal gives him an opportunity to compete for a role within Detroit’s organization while continuing his development.
Stillman comes from a strong NHL pedigree.
He is the son of former NHL forward Cory Stillman, a two-time Stanley Cup champion who played more than 1,000 career games and captured championships with the Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes. Cory also suited up for the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, and Florida Panthers during a successful 16-year NHL career.
The signing continues what has been an active offseason for Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman.
While Stillman is expected to begin the season competing for a spot with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit is betting that a former first-round talent can benefit from a change of scenery. If he can take the next step in his development, the Red Wings could uncover another valuable piece of organizational depth at minimal cost.
