The Detroit Red Wings will gather over the weekend at Little Caesars Arena to clean out their lockers and, more importantly, meet with their bosses. That translates to coach Todd McLellan and general manger Steve Yzerman.
Many of the Europeans head home as soon as possible after the regular season ends. The Wings' season ended with a 4-3 overtime loss Thursday at the Toronto Maple Leafs, five days after they had been eliminated from contending in race for a playoff spot.
It's the ninth straight year the Wings have missed advancing, sixth under Yzerman's management, first since McLellan was named coach during the Christmas break.
More: Red Wings go out on fitting note with 'horrendous' and 'disappointing' loss
The Wings were off Friday, after playing back-to-back games on the road to finish the season.
"We’ve got a lot of stuff to finish over the next three or four days," McLellan said. "The meetings that we have with players are really important."
It's about sending players young and veteran into the offseason with a plan for being better next season.
"We’ll give them some feedback on what we saw or what we think they can become and what we think they need to do, and we’ll get feedback from them on us," McLellan said. "Are we getting them the right information, are we giving them what they need so they’re fully prepared.
"We obviously have work to do. We didn’t get to where we want to go and when training camp does roll around, it’s time to go to work."
For young players like Marco Kasper, Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson, it's generally more about a workout and nutrion plan that enables them to maximize gaining physical strength. For veterans, it's also about nutrition, as well as coming back and playing better in all zones.
"I would have liked to contribute more," Dylan Larkin said. "As you get some time to reflect, you think about what went on. I’d have liked to be way more consistent for the guys. It’s been a disappointing, tough season. Hoping for a good summer and to be a way better player next year."
