When taking a look at the Detroit Pistons’ offseason moves, it is impossible to ignore the stark shift the team has made from a personnel standpoint to prioritize perimeter shooting at a greater level for the 2026-27 season.
During the summer, the Pistons have offloaded Tobias Harris through free agency and traded Isaiah Stewart, Caris LeVert and Marcus Sasser away, and that marginal exodus has brought a litany of three-point shooters into the Motor City with John Collins, Taurean Prince, Isaiah Joe and Gary Harris as their replacements.
Looking back to last year, all four new Pistons connected on deep shots at a minimum of 40%, so each player is bringing a particular degree of three-point efficiency to Detroit after Duncan Robinson was the team’s lone 40% shooter a season ago. But in that regard, the Pistons will have another player at their disposal who mirrors Robinson in multiple shooting categories.
Over the course of the whole season, both Robinson and Joe ranked No. 1 and 2 in the NBA for highest spot-up points per possession with Duncan checking in at 1.4 points and Joe at 1.38 per attempt. Since Cade Cunningham, Ebuka Okorie and Daniss Jenkins will be running the show at the point this year, Robinson and Joe should serve as the beneficiaries for the clean looks created from Detroit’s point guard trio.
In the postseason, Cunningham ran into trouble since Robinson was his only reliable downtown threat on the wing, so having Joe in the rotation should provide some floor spacing and perimeter gravity to a team that desperately needed those two qualities in their last playoff run. But when evaluating that particular postseason stretch, Robinson and Joe continue to rank among the league’s most reliable options with the former ranking in eighth at 45.5% for triple percentage in the fourth quarter of the playoffs while the latter checks in at sixth in the NBA with a 47.7% rating.
Going even further than that, Joe established himself as the league’s top three-point shooter from the corner last season, and that should immediately give the Pistons more options when Cunningham drives into the lane. Last year, the Pistons often stuck Ausar Thompson or Ron Holland II in the corner on offense whether by accident or by design, but having a more dangerous shooter in that spot should work in Detroit’s favor moving forward. Joe and Robinson are two of the most prolific three-point snipers in the NBA, so their presence beyond the arc should be a definite upgrade for the Pistons in that regard.
While Robinson and Joe are expected to duke it out for the starting off-ball role in the backcourt, the two have the size to potentially play together at the same time with Joe at the two and Robinson at the three. This lineup becomes increasingly attractive when considering how the Pistons flexed to a small-ball lineup against the Cleveland Cavaliers in round two with Cunningham at the point and Jenkins at the shooting guard role, so it is possible that Detroit offers a different iteration of that concept with Joe at the two and Robinson at the three this coming season.
