Just ahead of the start of the new league year, the Detroit Lions restructured quarterback Jared Goff's contract.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero was first to report the Lions had restructured Goff's contract. With the restructure, the Lions converted $40 million of Goff's base salary into signing bonus, creating $32 million of salary cap space in 2026.

The restructure lowered Goff's 2026 salary cap hit from $69.6 million to $37.6 million, per Over The Cap. Detroit also added a void year to Goff's contract.

Here's a look at Goff's new cap hits over the coming years, per Over The Cap:

  • 2026: $37.6 million
  • 2027: $62.6 million
  • 2028: $69.6 million
  • 2029: $16 million

Goff was viewed as a likely Lions restructure candidate. Detroit could create an additional $36 million in salary cap space if it chose to restructure the contracts of offensive tackle Penei Sewell and receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown.

According to Over The Cap, the Lions currently have $35 million in cap space. The new league year begins today at 4 p.m. ET.
