The Detroit Lions have officially turned the page. On the first day of the NFL's legal tampering period, the Lions announced that they have released longtime starting left tackle Taylor Decker.
After initially announcing his return to the Lions for an 11th season, Decker shocked the NFL world by revealing that he had requested his release from the Lions last Friday. Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported that the Lions asked Decker to cut his salary.
Decker started 140 regular-season games across his 10-year Lions career.
Releasing Decker clears $11.6 million in cap space for Detroit in 2026. The Lions add $9.4 million in dead money to their 2026 salary cap.
"Things change, 145 games started, 3 playoff appearances, 2 division titles, a decade carrying the shield. I fully intended to do it once again, but my time as a Lion is coming to an end. In the weeks since notifying the team of my return, there have been numerous discussions. Many of which were a surprise to me, and we could not find common ground. Therefore, I decided to request my release.
"I am opting for a clean and amicable close to what has been such a beautiful 10 years going to war as a Lion. It has been the absolute privilege of my life to be your LT for the past 10 years. And I am forever grateful for the opportunity the Ford family and Lions organization afforded me," Decker wrote in his Instagram post last Friday.
In the wake of the Decker news, the Lions have made a pair of NFL free agency moves thus far. Detroit inked former Carolina Panthers center Cade Mays to a three-year, $25 million deal with $14 million in guaranteed money. The Lions also signed offensive tackle Larry Borom.
A former Chicago Bear and Miami Dolphin, Borom brings 63 career games played and 38 starts to the Motor City.
