DARTMOUTH — A veteran catcher at Bishop Stang, Nate Moniz has played second base for the past six games as his team has battled injuries in its lineup.
“This is only the second game that Nate has caught this year because of some of the injuries that we’ve had,” said Bishop Stang head coach Brian Rose. “We’ve had a few guys playing out of position because of the need of the team. It’s a very unselfish team. They’re doing what’s best for the group and I think that’s why we’re seeing that success. A lot of guys are buying into a team-first mentality.”
Moniz went back to his regular position behind the plate on Wednesday afternoon and delivered a strong performance in Bishop Stang’s 4-3 win over Bishop Fenwick in Catholic Central League baseball action.
Not only did Moniz catch for three different pitchers, he came down with a pair of flyouts.
“It comes with practice and just time,” said Moniz of developing chemistry with his pitchers. “I had a great mentor in (2023 Standard-Times Baseball Player of the Year) Ryan Jones. He’s been great. He’s got me to where I am now and prepared me for what we’re doing.”
Moniz also came up big at the plate against Bishop Fenwick, driving in Bishop Stang’s first of two runs in the first inning on a deep shot to left field.
“I’ve actually been struggling a little bit so today I came in trying to relax a little bit and just get it done and drive the ball,” he said.

Even though the Spartans were without their No. 3 and No. 4 batters in seniors Drew Taylor and Matt Burt, they captured their second straight win and sixth in seven games this season.
“When you lose your 3 and 4 hitters, it’s tough, but it gives other guys an opportunity,” Rose said. “We didn’t score the runs we normally do, but that’s baseball.
“We’re playing good baseball for the most part. We’re defensively not where we need to be and that’s what has been giving us the problems so far this season. Our pitchers have been doing a good job of throwing strikes and giving us a chance. We have a young team and we have a lot of learning to do.”
Stang got contributions from a pair of freshmen — reliever Daniel Delk and second baseman Devin Lord — as well as three sophomores — reliever Bubba Garcia, third baseman Amir Cartagena and left fielder Tommy Guenette.
“Right now we have a few injuries and that gives other guys a chance to step up and play,” Rose said. “You watch the Red Sox or any Major League team that is a young team, they have mistakes they have to work through and we’re no different.
“It’s great for their experience and it’s going to benefit them in the long run. If we can steal some wins here and there, it helps us as well.”
Garcia struck out the final batter in the fourth inning and pitched a scoreless fifth before Delk pitched 2 scoreless innings, striking out 3 with no hits and no walks.
“Bubba came in first and shut the door down,” Rose said. “He’s been really good for us out of the pen and Delk came in for a 2-inning save, his first as a varsity player.”
Bishop Stang, which improved to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in the CCL, is off until April 26.
“We put a few goals in mind at the beginning of the year, trying to look at achievements we can do,” Moniz said. “Starting off hot in the CCL has been good for us. We’re just trying to get things done as a team and work as a team.”
Bishop Stang senior shortstop Brock Winslow added, “I think we have the potential to do anything. One through nine in the lineup we have guys who can hit and we have depth everywhere in the field. I think we can go really far.”
Nolan Donaldson went 2-for-2 with a walk while Moniz (RBI and run scored), Winslow (run scored) and Cartagena (RBI) each went 1-for-3. Landon Cardoza was 1-for-2 with a walk.
