Earlier this week, the Seattle Seahawks signed pass rusher Derick Hall to a three-year contract extension worth $42 million. The deal includes $21 million in guaranteed money, and can reach a maximum value of $46 million through incentives. Hall had one season remaining on his rookie contract, but is now signed with the Seahawks for the foreseeable future.
Hall could have played out his rookie contract and tested free agency next offseason. Instead, the former Auburn standout chose financial security while taking a team-friendly extension with the Seahawks. Hall could have possibly made significantly more money next offseason, but opted to sign an agreement with the Seahawks now.
Hall discussed the decision at OTAs recently.
"On my side, I obviously wanted to get something done," Hall told reporters. "We love it here and I'm happy to be here. This place is really special to me," Hall responded to inquiries about signing the extension now as opposed to waiting for next offseason. "It's really about the love of football. This is a first-class organization. I was willing to sacrifice whatever everyone else thought I was leaving on the table to stay with this team."
That's the type of team-first attitude that helped the Seahawks win Super Bowl 60.

Derick Hall said his extension (three years and $42M, per @AdamSchefter) had been in the works for about three weeks.
He explained why he took the bird in the hand as opposed to waiting a year and potentially making more as a free agent.
