Jon Rothstein has a video out that has a surprising suggestion: Duke’s second team could be ranked.
It’s not as ludicrous as it sounds.
Here’s who Rothstein expects will start: Caleb Foster, John Blackwell, Dame Sarr, Pat Ngongba, and either Cameron Williams or Joaquim Boumtje Boumtje.
The second team therefore would be either Williams or Boumtje Boumtje, Cayden Boozer, Bryson Howard, Deron Rippey, and Drew Scharnowski.
And the biggest surprise in this video?
Rothstein says his sources tell him that people around the program are just raving about Scharnowski.
We’ll get into this more when we do our Duke season preview, but Jon Scheyer has gotten a lot of criticism for how his teams have finished the end of the season.
Fair enough.
However, we don’t think he’s had a healthy roster yet in March.
In Year I, both Dereck Lively and Dariq Whitehead had serious limitations due to injury, and Kyle Filipowski had a hip issue that required surgery after the season.
In Year II, Caleb Foster had limitations.
In Year III, Foster was still recovering when the season started, and at the end, Cooper Flagg was injured during the ACC Tournament, and Maliq Brown had his shoulder issues.
Last year, down the stretch, Foster and Pat Ngongba, both starters, were on ambulatory scooters.
It’s hard to know if those injuries were a factor in building such a deep roster, but it would make perfect sense. Imagine, for instance, if junior Foster had been healthy and ready for the UConn game in March. Things might have been quite different.
