The Denver Broncos head into the 2025 NFL draft spoiled for choice on who to pick. It is widely agreed that the Broncos may draft either a wide receiver or a running back. They have had moderate success drafting both positions.

Broncos Wire recently counted down the top 5 running backs drafted by Denver; it seems appropriate that we only do the same for tight ends.

No. 5: Orson Mobley, Salem (Rd. 6, 151 overall, 1986 NFL draft)

Mobley played in three Super Bowls for the Denver Broncos from 1986-1990. In 61 career games, Mobley caught 84 passes for 1,019 yards and four touchdowns.

No. 4: Tony Scheffler, Western Michigan (Rd. 2, 61 overall, 2006 NFL draft)

Sheffler was a great, reliable tight end for the Broncos, playing for the franchise from 2006-09. Scheffler caught 138 passes for 1,896 yards with 14 touchdowns in Denver before finishing his career with the Detroit Lions.

No. 3: Virgil Green, Nevada (Rd. 7, 204 overall, 2011 NFL draft)

Green was a consequential part of the Broncos' Super Bowl teams of the 2010s. Green and fellow 2011 draftee Julius Thomas caught passes from Hall of Famer Peyton Manning, helping win the Broncos' third championship in team history. Green played for the Broncos from 2011-2017 before finishing his career with the Los Angeles Chargers.

No. 2: Julius Thomas, Portland State (Rd. 4, 129 overall, 2011 NFL draft)

Julius Thomas was another huge part of the 2011-2014 Broncos squad that reached a Super Bowl with quarterback Peyton Manning. Thomas caught a historic touchdown from Manning in 2013: Manning's 51st career touchdown, which broke Tom Brady's record of 50 touchdowns in a single season. Manning ended the 2013 season with 55 touchdowns.

No. 1: Shannon Sharpe (Rd. 7, 192 overall, 1990 NFL draft)

Sharpe redefined a position once known for blocking. Sharpe held many of the tight end receiving records after his retirement in 2003. Sharpe played for the Broncos from 1990-1999, and then re-signed with Denver in 2002, finishing his career after the 2003 season. Sharpe was an eight-time Pro Bowler, a four-time AP first-team All-Pro, and a one second-team All-Pro. Sharpe was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

The big question remains: Will Broncos head coach Sean Payton get another "Joker" in the 2025 NFL draft? The NFL draft begins on April 24 and continues through April 26.
