Deion Sanders stirs up Nike drama with girlfriend Karrueche Tran originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Deion Sanders, in a recent Well Off Media video titled "A Snow Day at the Sanders Compound", addressed abusing his Nike connection. The exchange was not contentious or even necessarily accusatory. Although not on the level of The Godfather's "I know it was you, Fredo and you broke my heart", there could be a tangible concern.
The video excerpt was friendly and only includes Deion Sanders, his girlfriend Karreuche Tran, Deiondra Sanders and her son, Snow. It falls in line with almost any interaction with Coach Prime where he decides to casually check a situation. Not completely dissimilar to anytime the Colorado Buffaloes head football coach updates his child rankings. He's not starting a fight but does want something on the record.
Sanders looked towards eldest daughter Deiondra and noticed her Nike Air Dunk lows that color coordinated with her pants. "Dang," Sanders said. "How do you feel when someone abuses the privilege of Nike?" To the uninitiated, Sanders was speaking to Deiondra, but the message seemed directed at Tran.
Prime's Nike Interrogation
After the 'abuse' question, Deiondra seems confused over who he could possibly be referring to. Sanders claimed that some in the family circle are taking the Nike privilege too far. Deiondra almost immediately responded with, "I didn't know you could take it too far."
Deion moved closer and was physically only talking to Deiondra. This is a red herring as Deiondra is not the focus of his inquiry. He goes onto claim that they (Deion and Deiondra) know who the two people are that abuse the Nike connection. Deiondra hesitates but eventually acknowledges that Shilo Sanders is the first name, but not who he's referring to now.
"It's not him (Shilo), he's exhausted his account," Deion added.
Deiondra successfully rattles off all the usual suspects. It's not Bucky (Deion Sanders Jr, who is operating the camera recording this video), it's not Shedeur, who Deion acknowledges has his own Nike setup, and it's not Bossy (Deion's youngest daughter). Deiondra reiterated that it was not her and Deion responded by saying someone "just takes advantage."
Right about the moment it clocks that Prime is saying this intentionally to the people in front of him, the next thought is it can't be Snow. Snow is the grand baby and, by simply existing, does not qualify as the target of the inquiry. Grandpa's got Snow taken care of and that would never be an issue. That's when Bucky, behind the camera, identifies the culprit.
Karrueche does not seem to take offense to the accusation and instead starts explaining her motivation. From outfits that Prime finds to be "cute" and needing the footwear to execute those outfits to all the people in Prime's circle, she makes sure to order for them. Including Lauren, a CU athletic trainer and Coach Prime's first direct medical professional, Momma Prime, as well as Prime's sister.
"She knows," Deion added. "Her game is second-to-none."
Prime's commentary parallels a real Nike concern
One of the topics discussed in social media as well as traditional media when Sanders agreed to coach the Buffaloes revolved around the brand the Buffaloes would wear under Prime. Colorado had been a Nike program for some time. However, Sanders had long since moved away from Nike and has a current partnership with a Nike competitor, Under Armour.
Some believed Sanders would force Under Armour on Colorado, while others maintained Sanders would need to make up with Nike due to Colorado's Nike contract. In short order, the Sanders-Nike relationship was repaired with both parties on the same page.

Throughout Prime's time in Boulder, Nike's impact on the program has been noteworthy. Whether it was Travis Hunter 'stealing' shoes from Prime's office (those were jokes) or Bucky negotiating which shoes he gets and which Prime gets, it's always been part of the inside access Well Off provides. In addition, Smitty, the CU Football equipment manager, has become a bit of a celebrity with the Nike products he often introduces in Well Off Media videos.
The video referenced plays like Deion simply having fun with Karreuche and Deiondra, if not a veiled dig at Shilo. At no point did this feel serious. However, it is not without tangible irony.
Heavy is the head that wears the crown
Nike is facing issues right now. Much of it is the company's fault. Consumers have altered the landscape. For the last 10-15 years, Nike has benefited from a hype level surrounding almost everything they release. Sneakerheads and resellers almost try to out hype each other on most releases. This behavior created an increased market as well as a third-party market that at this stage might be Nike's biggest problem.
As the economy and other factors have impacted the consumer base, a fair amount of Nike Teflon hype has died off. Consumers are picking and choosing what products to buy instead of seeing most everything sell out in record time. The resellers and other industry 'hype beasts' are looking at other brands. The nostalgic connection to the product line is not as strong as it used to be. The crowd that fueled the hype era are getting older and less likely to hype up everything.
Lately, there has been a growing conversation about liquidation rates. Following an era where everything sold out immediately, more discussions are being had over products destined to sit. In a meeting with the Sanders family and Nike in 2023, Shilo Sanders inquired about liquidation rates. The Nike rep was adamant to say they never wanted anything to sit in. The problem is product sitting is a growing concern.
The Sanders family has done a good job of promoting Nike. They are often showing signature samples, custom sneakers made specifically for Prime, as well as a veritable ocean of colorway options that are rarely floating. Nike has to do their part now and fix their backyard, so to speak. Pricing, allocation volumes, frequency of releases and an inability to control how their products are being sold by authorized or unauthorized retailers, specifically on a secondary market are real problems they need to address.

While Sanders seemed to just give his loved ones a little friendly jab over his Nike connection, it does speak to a larger concern Sanders likely did not intend. Nike is the King of the Hill, but the competitor brands are trying to cut into Nike's market share. In order to maintain their status as the best sneaker manufacturer, Nike needs to address the vultures in the market.
While not the first or even tenth priority, how Nike supplies its signature athletes and preferred customers might be on a short list of items to revisit. Nike is not likely to have any issues with the Sanders family or their immediate circle, but this does speak to a larger problem. If Nike wants to ensure they remain the King of the Hill in the sneaker world, a great many changes could be on the horizon. Even if they don't directly affect Deion Sanders or the Colorado Buffaloes.
