In 2022, then-Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was suspended six games for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing drugs policy. The decision helped derail a Cardinals’ season that began with promise, as Arizona finished 4-13 and lost Kyler Murray to a torn ACL.

Four years later, Hopkins is launching a bold accusation, saying that his suspension was not what it seemed.

Hopkins published his message in response to an Instagram post from Tony Robinson, a financial well-being influencer, accusing former Cardinals general manager Steve Keim of being connected to a fraud scheme. It is not clear what evidence connected Keim to the scheme.

“I got set up when I played for his team and lost 13 million,” Hopkins wrote. “Skeme Slime was my GM, contaminated drug test go figure how that happened.”

Hopkins’ comment now appears to be deleted.

Keim also responded to Robinson’s post. In his comment — which has not been deleted — Keim wrote that Robinson had privately apologized for connecting his name to the fraud scheme. Robinson never publicly acknowledged said apology, and has left up multiple posts about Keim.

It is also not clear how Hopkins arrived at the claim that he lost $13 million due to his drug suspension. Per analysis from Pro Football Talk at the time, Hopkins lost $5.2 million because of his six-game absence.

This is not the first time that Hopkins has publicly pushed back on the circumstances of his suspension. At the time, he wrote that he was “confused and shocked” in a since-deleted X post.

“I am very mindful of what I put in my body and have always taken a holistic approach, so I am working with my team to investigate how this could've happened,” Hopkins wrote. “But even as careful as I have been, clearly I wasn't careful enough.”

Hopkins, who spent last season with the Baltimore Ravens, is now working as an assistant wide receivers coach at Georgia Tech.
