To win 12 baseball games in a row, at any level, takes a few moments that defy common sense.
The Boston Red Sox went down by three runs to the Tampa Bay Rays in the seventh inning on Saturday evening. The Rays lead the AL East, and they have a strong bullpen. That might finally have been it for Boston at 11 in a row.
And then the Red Sox scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Wilyer Abreu delivered the go-ahead two-run home run, and the Red Sox went on to win 7-6.
Abreu, with two homers for the second consecutive game, is on fire.
The Red Sox, with a brilliant ballgame for the 12th consecutive game, are on fire.
The near-impossible, a Red Sox team with a record above .500 this season, has been realized.
They were 37-48 a couple of weeks ago.
They're now 49-48.
They simply can't stop winning.

They're like a runner going down a steep hill, a hill that keeps going down and down and down.
For a while, a runner can resist gravity.
Eventually, the massive size of Earth's gravity outdoes the will of mind and legs, and it's impossible to resist speeding up.
The Red Sox are still speeding up, and they can't help it anymore.
This wasn't a pretty game by any means. They only had six hits to score seven runs. They made two errors. Patrick Sandoval got roughed up before he left the game.
Even in the ninth, Aroldis Chapman walked two and didn't strike out any.
None of that mattered.
The Red Sox forgot how to lose.
It's a dozen in a row, and everything seems possible now.
