Former Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery isn’t staying quiet.
The veteran running back took to social media this week after seeing comments made by a Woodward Sports personality regarding his new role with the Houston Texans, making it clear he didn’t appreciate the criticism.
The controversy began after a video surfaced discussing Montgomery’s expected workload in Houston.
With the Texans expected to use both Montgomery and second-year running back Woody Marks, Woodward Sports host Daniel “Eazy” Ezerkis reacted by saying:
Co-host Spencer Raxter could be seen in the background shaking his head as the discussion unfolded.
The clip quickly made its way to Montgomery.
After seeing the comments, Montgomery responded on Instagram with a strongly worded message directed at the hosts.
The response quickly gained traction across social media, with fans debating whether the criticism of Montgomery was fair.
The irony of the discussion is that Montgomery has spent much of his recent NFL career thriving in a shared backfield.
While in Detroit, he formed one of the league’s best running back tandems alongside Jahmyr Gibbs. The combination helped keep both players fresh while giving the Lions one of the NFL’s most dangerous rushing attacks.
Now in Houston, Montgomery is once again expected to share touches, this time with Woody Marks.
That shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.
Across today’s NFL, more teams are embracing committee backfields to preserve their running backs over the course of a 17-game season. Splitting carries has become the norm rather than the exception.
Following Montgomery’s response, Ezerkis told Lions On SIthat he never intended to disrespect the former Lions running back.
According to Ezerkis, he even reached out to Montgomery after the exchange.
“I don’t think I said anything egregious,” Ezerkis explained. “I just wish he was still here splitting carries, is all.”
He added that he understood how public figures often see the harshest reactions online and wished Montgomery and his family nothing but the best in Houston.
Although Montgomery clearly took exception to the comments, there’s little doubt he remains a fan favorite among many Lions supporters.
During his time in Detroit, he became known for his punishing running style, leadership, and willingness to do whatever the team needed to win. Even after Jahmyr Gibbs emerged as one of the NFL’s premier offensive weapons, Montgomery embraced his role and continued producing at a high level.
That’s why many Detroit fans were disappointed to see him traded this offseason.
