Former Detroit Lions running back David Montgomery has made his position clear on Jahmyr Gibbs’ contract situation.
Montgomery reacted on Instagram after reports surfaced that Gibbs could remain off the practice field while waiting for a new deal. His message was direct and unmistakably supportive of his former backfield partner.
“Give my baby anything he want! He earned that crap! On mamas”
Montgomery and Gibbs formed one of the NFL’s most productive running back tandems during their time together in Detroit.
Their contrasting styles helped make the Lions’ offense difficult to defend. Montgomery supplied power and physicality, while Gibbs brought elite speed, receiving ability and explosive-play potential.
Even after leaving Detroit, Montgomery clearly remains close to Gibbs and believes the Lions should reward him accordingly.
Gibbs did not participate in Wednesday’s practice as contract talks continued. He reported to training camp, making the situation more of a hold-in than a traditional holdout.
The Lions have placed even more responsibility on Gibbs heading into the 2026 season.
He is expected to serve as the centerpiece of Detroit’s rushing attack and remain heavily involved as a receiver. That expanded role strengthens his argument for a contract that places him among the NFL’s highest-paid running backs.
Montgomery apparently sees no need for a lengthy debate.
