LEBANON – Team Penske's David Malukas will be available for the Borchetta Bourbon Music City Grand Prix on July 19 (4:30 p.m. CT, FOX) at Nashville Superspeedway, after a crash in practice that sent him to the hospital.
"David Malukas has been seen and released from a local Nashville-area hospital and has been cleared by the IndyCar Medical staff to return to the No. 12 Verizon Chevrolet," Team Penske said in a statement via X.
Malukas drove into a wall on the left side of his car on Turn 2 of the 1.33-mile track during a morning practice.
"Everything came back clean," Malukas said. "Nothing is broken. Nothing is torn which is pretty impressive because I literally took the wheel off with my knee."
He said the team shouldn't be expect much of an adjustment period except its starting position, which dropped to No. 25 after being ruled for the 9-spot grid penalty. That penalty is triggered when there's an unapproved engine or mechanical change.
"When it comes to race running, we shouldn't be too far behind," Malukas said. "We have the best teammates, Josef (Newgarden) and Scott (McLaughlin), their qualifying was good; the car is gonna be great."
Team Penske's Conor Daly was set to replace Malukas in qualifying until the car was ruled out for repair. Daly would have been an option had Malukas been unable to race.
