He may have hung up his international boots in 2009, but England icon David Beckham helped brighten the subdued atmosphere inside New York/New Jersey Stadium before the Three Lions rediscovered their form at the highest level.

A capacity crowd descended to watch Panama's final match of the World Cup, as England sought to claim top spot in Group L and earn a more favorable route in the knockout stages, having already advanced with a victory and stalemate from the team's opening two fixtures.

The anticipation was palpable before kickoff, with England supporters commandeering a neighboring shopping center, hanging countless flags across the barriers. Following a 4-2 triumph over Croatia but laboring to a goalless tie with Ghana, England followers were eager to see the national squad regain momentum, though there were early worries.

The energy and atmosphere of the encounter shifted when England icon Beckham appeared on the giant screens, generating the loudest roar of the evening. The talking point of this World Cup has been the sweltering conditions and the controversial hydration break, which has been implemented irrespective of the weather. It certainly wasn't required in New Jersey, where substantial precipitation and milder temperatures than in the United Kingdom prevailed.

For England, it felt more familiar than a road trip in the U.S., but that didn't make the display any better. A lackluster opening period ended scoreless, with already-ousted Panama creating the superior opportunities. Supporters had queued for hours before the venue opened, with some dressed in ponchos and jackets, while others endured a drenching throughout the afternoon. The bare minimum those followers anticipated was passion and determination, but England initially scarcely materialized.

An uninspiring second half ensued, and it appeared England might claim second place in Group L. Yet just as England, Thomas Tuchel, and the supporters desperately sought inspiration, Beckham unexpectedly appeared on the Jumbotron, and England fans erupted as though witnessing a goal.

By chance, star forward Harry Kane created England's finest opportunity moments afterward, and the audience suddenly discovered the drive and confidence they'd been desperately seeking. Minutes later, Jude Bellingham gave England the advantage, and an overwhelming wave of relief swept through the stadium. Two quickly transformed into three, as Kane then drove a header into the upper corner to secure England a 2-0 advantage over Panama. It genuinely felt like a match held in the U.K., with a darts tune echoing through the speakers.

Thousands of the supporters at New York/New Jersey Stadium had attended Madison Square Garden on Thursday and Friday for the New York Darts Masters. England's followers dominated the arena during an unforgettable week in New York City. It proved to be a successful event, though Panama believed it had netted in the closing minutes to reduce the margin. Nevertheless, the offside flag prevented Panama from recording its first and only goal of the World Cup.

England's display was far from their finest, yet the Three Lions will advance as group winners and gear up for their Round of 32 matchup. Beckham's mere appearance was enough to energize the crowd, demonstrating his enduring impact. The match wasn't without complications for England, as Jarel Quansah experienced an injury concern and was substituted off. Quansah was already deputizing for injured right-backs Tino Livramento and Reece James.
