After joining the Utah Jazz as the No. 2 overall pick, former Kansas guard Darryn Peterson is eager to join the organization and learn from his new veteran teammates.
Peterson was a second-team All-Big 12 selection last season, averaging 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.4 steals while shooting 38.2% from 3-point range. He led the Jayhawks in scoring, ranking fourth among all players in the conference.
The 6-foot-6 Peterson pointed to established players on the roster, such as former All-Stars Jaren Jackson Jr. and Lauri Markkanen, and mainstay Keyonte George, among others, as those he is looking forward to playing with. He dined with George on Friday.
"I think me and Keyonte will be a great backcourt," Peterson said on Saturday. "There is a lot of All-Star and upcoming talent. Hopefully, I have a chance to be an All-Star, so I'm going to try to listen to those guys and pick their brains. Just to be surrounded by so much greatness, I think, will be great for myself and the team."
Peterson was in the conversation to be the top pick this year before the Washington Wizards settled on AJ Dybantsa as their choice on Tuesday. He is the first Jayhawks player to be selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA draft.
Believing he should be the top pick, the 19-year-old initially opted to visit only with the Wizards. He eventually met with the Jazz, and he has since expressed his excitement about working with the group, a sentiment evident during his introductory press conference.
Peterson won't have to wait much longer before hitting the court, with the Salt Lake City Summer League tipping off on July 4. He has already received his first piece of advice from George, which figures to help him in practice this week.
"He said it is all great and thinks I'll fit in well," Peterson said of his conversation with George. "I told him summer league practice is coming up on Monday, and what to expect. He said, 'Whatever you think is hard, just multiply it by 10.' I'm ready to come in and work; that didn't scare me at all. I'm ready."
