Daniel Cormier believes UFC Freedom 250 was the perfect setting for Justin Gaethje to pull off a massive upset.

Gaethje (28-5 MMA, 11-5 UFC) shocked the masses when he battered Ilia Topuria (17-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) en route to a fourth-round doctor's stoppage TKO in Sunday's main event at the White House in Washington DC. Gaethje was the only American fighter in a title fight at UFC Freedom 250, and he finally realized his dream of becoming undisputed lightweight champion on a historic night.

"When we were talking about this thing and we were building this thing, I told (Jon) Anik and (Joe) Rogan, 'I believe that a setting can propel people to great things,'" Cormier said on his YouTube channel. "I'm not the type of person that does not think that the environment can play a part in the result of a fight.

"Tonight, I feel like that happened. Justin Gaethje always is a dog, but I think when you start to couple everything together, the birthday of the United States of America, the White House South Lawn, fighting an undefeated champion, it all worked perfectly."

Cormier said Gaethje represented his country in the best way possible.

"JG fought like a warrior, man," Cormier said. "It was just a visual. Him walking past all the former presidents, American flag draped over his shoulders, it just gave you goosebumps."
