Former Detroit Lions offensive tackle Dan Skipper isn’t wasting any time turning the page to the next chapter of his football life.

Just hours after announcing his retirement from the NFL, Skipper is already getting hands-on experience on the coaching side. According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the longtime Lions lineman is volunteering as an offensive line coach for the East team at this year’s East-West Shrine Bowl, giving him an early opportunity to begin what could become a full-time coaching career.

“And so it begins,” Schefter wrote. “Former Lions OT Dan Skipper is volunteering as an offensive line coach at this year’s East-West Shrine Bowl… getting an early chance to start a potential coaching career.”

Skipper, 31, officially announced his retirement earlier in the day after 24 years of playing football, stating that he is ready to “report as retired” and pursue coaching. Now, that transition is already underway.

The East-West Shrine Bowl is one of the premier pre-draft showcases in the country, giving Skipper the chance to work directly with NFL-caliber offensive linemen while learning the daily responsibilities of coaching at a high level. For a player who spent years earning a reputation as a grinder, a leader in the locker room, and a technician in the trenches, the move feels like a natural fit.

Skipper appeared in 69 NFL games across his career, including 12 with the Lions in 2025, and was widely respected for his preparation, professionalism, and ability to mentor younger linemen. Those traits now translate directly to the sideline.

What started as a retirement announcement is quickly becoming the beginning of something new. For Dan Skipper, the pads may be off, but the football journey is far from over.
