FRISCO - Dak Prescott said not too long ago that despite rehabbing from 2024's nasty season-ending injury, he could play a game right now if needed.
And on Tuesday here inside The Star, he sort of did that.
All eyes were on the Dallas Cowboys quarterback as OTAs begin this week under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, with the media allowed access on Tuesday.
And yes, there was a pleasant surprise in store.
With Dak returning from that "hamstring-torn-off-the-bone injury, it was suspected that he might advance this spring very slowly toward full participation at training camp in Oxnard in late July.
But instead, Prescott was involved. Deeply.
To our eyes, Dak took all of his normal first-team turns in leading Dallas' new-look offense. And maybe the biggest question that lingers - regarding his mobility at age 31 as he enters Year 10 of his NFL career while having dealt with a handful of serious leg-related issues - seems answered.
“(I) pretty much can do it all, (I) feel good,” Prescott said once practice ended and he and a media congregation moved indoors. “I think I'm just not cleared for contact, which we've got a while for that anyway, so I'm out there in the team activities.
"I feel good. ... Feelin' great. Just trying to obviously stay that way.''
There are cynics who are making their jokes about Prescott "being cleared for football activities except for full contact,'' noting that "full contact'' is what football is all about.
But that's not what "football in May'' is all about.
Dallas is installing a new system under a new coach, and integrating new prospective standouts including George Pickens at receiver and Tyler Booker in the O-line and a grand total of four new running backs who will compete for work.
Prescott being the hub of that wheel matters right now.
And then ultimately?
Keeping Dak healthy is a big key here, so we imagine that the Cowboys and the coaching staff will play the cautious game with Prescott.
Nevertheless, these are good signs from a good day.
Often rolling out, usually off-script, Dak didn't appear to be limited by what was being asked of him, to our eyes. Weapons like CeeDee Lamb and Pickens and especially KaVontae Turpin were featured, and backup tight end Brevyn Spann-Ford also had a notable day.
Prescott gets to feel good about his targets. And he gets to feel good about his health ... all adding up to a winning day here inside The Star.
