Dabo Swinney doesn’t think college football can continue operating in the gray area when it comes to transfer portal tampering.
The Clemson head coach said Friday that if the NCAA is going to have rules preventing schools from contacting players on other rosters, those rules have to come with real penalties. Otherwise, he believes the sport should stop pretending tampering is prohibited.
“We are probably going to need some congressional help from that,” Swinney said during ACC Kickoff. “There has to be some type of rule in place. There needs to be consequences or just say ‘the heck with it’ and do not worry about it and let it be the wild, wild west.”
Swinney’s frustration isn’t new. After linebacker Luke Ferrelli enrolled at Clemson following his transfer from Cal earlier this year, the Tigers unexpectedly lost him to Ole Miss. Swinney later said Rebels defensive coordinator Pete Golding contacted Ferrelli after he had already joined Clemson, which would violate NCAA rules.
To Swinney, the issue continues because there is little reason for programs to worry about crossing the line.
“There are these other leagues that have rules. There are consequences – suspensions, fines, firings or whatever. There are contracts and things like that,” Swinney said. “There are lots of things. To this point, it is rampant because in college sports nobody really fears or worries about those consequences.”
Help could eventually come from outside the NCAA. The proposed Protect the College Sports Act includes language that would punish schools found guilty of tampering, and reports this week indicated the legislation could move through the Senate in the near future.
