Clemson defensive tackle Hevin Brown-Shuler is facing a long road ahead after the program announced Tuesday that the redshirt freshman has been diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma.

Head coach Dabo Swinney shared more details during an interview with WYFF 4, explaining that Brown-Shuler had been preparing to take the next step in his development before doctors discovered something was wrong during offseason training.

“It’s going to be a long year for him, no question about it,” Swinney said. “But he’s got great doctors, he’s got an amazing family, and he’s got a great spirit.”

According to Swinney, Brown-Shuler began feeling unwell during a workout after spring practice. Clemson’s medical staff pushed for further testing, which led to the diagnosis. Treatments were scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Despite the difficult news, Swinney emphasized the positive outlook surrounding Brown-Shuler’s recovery.

“We’re very optimistic,” Swinney said. “We’ll put our arms around him, and we’re going to be right there with him every step of the way as he goes through this journey. Hopefully, this time next year, everything goes well, and he will have one of the great comeback stories in college football.”

Brown-Shuler also released a statement Tuesday, saying doctors discovered a mass in his chest before diagnosing Hodgkin lymphoma. He added that the prognosis is “very good” and said he plans to approach the challenge with “optimism and determination.”

The former four-star recruit has appeared in seven games across the last two seasons for Clemson. Entering the 2026 season, Brown-Shuler had totaled six tackles over 106 defensive snaps while continuing to develop into a bigger part of Clemson’s defensive line rotation.

Before arriving at Clemson, Brown-Shuler starred at Pace Academy, earning All-American Bowl honors and multiple all-state selections during his high school career.
