Cubs trade rumors could lead to deal with Yankees for 24-year-old slugger originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The New York Yankees' issues were prevalent over the past few days, dropping a series to a New York Mets team that shouldn't have been on the same field as them.
We saw many of the same problems the Yankees have had for most of this year, though they were still winning at a very high level.
The bullpen problems are something that obviously has to be fixed, and there is a very high likelihood that they will be at some time over the next few weeks to months.
The issues in the infield are also tough to ignore, as third baseman Ryan McMahon and second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. have been absolutely horrendous.
It's a bit more surprising that Chisholm has struggled, though the problems with McMahon are quite literally impossible to ignore and need to be fixed, as he's hitting just .183 with 41 strikeouts in 120 at-bats.
There could be a potential fix in Chicago, depending on what route the Yankees want to take. I know it might not be the popular opinion, but going after somebody like Matt Shaw could make sense, even if the youngster is hitting just .245 with three home runs this year.
“The Chicago Cubs, who are seeking a front-line starter at the trade deadline, may have no choice but to move infielder Matt Shaw, who’s blocked at third base by Alex Bregman and second base by Nico Hoerner. He has been in the starting lineup just 22 times this season,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today wrote.
The promising part here is that Shaw is only 24 years old and is a Northeast guy, attending Worcester Academy in high school and playing his college days at the University of Maryland.
His time in Chicago seems to be coming to an end, and the Yankees can benefit from that. Depending on what they have to give up, I wouldn't hate kicking the tires on a guy who has a load of potential.
