Cubs make bold Opening Day decision on All-Star outfielder with 179 career home runs originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Chicago Cubs are putting the finishing touches on their roster as Opening Day approaches.
Spring training allowed manager Craig Counsell and the front office to see which outfielders deserve a chance to make an impact to begin the regular season.
According to Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, All-Star corner outfielder Michael Conforto was informed that he made the Cubs' Opening Day roster.
The 33-year-old was in camp as a non-roster invite after the worst season of his career in 2025 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Seiya Suzuki will not be ready for Chicago's opener after injuring his right knee during the World Baseball Classic with Team Japan.
Conforto makes Cubs' Opening Day roster
A ghastly performance at the plate led to a -0.7 bWAR in 138 games with the Dodgers last season for Conforto. From one season to the next, his OPS dropped from .759 in 2024 with the San Francisco Giants to .637.
It's unclear how long Suzuki will be out and if his injury requires an injured-list stint. If the Japanese slugger does not have a lengthy absence, Conforto's time with the NL Central club could be brief.
A veteran of 10 years, Conforto made his debut in 2015 with the New York Mets and hit 27 or more home runs in three consecutive seasons from 2017-19, so he does offer some pop.
