Jonathan Long wasn’t expected to make the Chicago Cubs’ opening day roster. The 24-year-old reached the Triple-A level in 2025, but was blocked at first base — his primary position — by a healthy Michael Busch.

Nonetheless, Long proved he could hold his own against MLB pitching in the Cactus League, slashing .333/.444/.476 in nine games.

On March 22, the Cubs reassigned Long to their minor league camp only four days before opening day.

Right-handed pitchers Corbin Martin and Collin Snider were also included in the Cubs’ latest round of roster cuts, which reduced their spring training roster from 41 to 38.

Long, the Cubs’ No. 9 prospect according to FanGraphs, slashed .305/.404/.479 last year at Triple-A Iowa.

Snider, 30, went 1-0 with a 4.50 ERA in eight Cactus League innings. The right-handed reliever is 9-7 with a 4.48 ERA in 128 major league games with the Kansas City Royals (2022-23) and Seattle Mariners (2024-25).
