Cristiano Ronaldo breaks Mexico star’s unwanted World Cup record with 17 shots on goal amid Portugal’s exit

Cristiano Ronaldo is once again eliminated from the FIFA World Cup.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup marked Cristiano Ronaldo’s sixth appearance in the tournament, with many expecting him to finally lift the trophy.

After all, Portugal finally had a solid squad around their 41-year-old striker, but Spain ended their journey following a 1-0 win in the Round of 16.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 17 shots at goal make a new World Cup record​

Ronaldo ended the campaign with just three goals to his name. While he finally ended his World Cup knockout goal drought, the 5x Ballon d’Or winner created another unwanted record in the process.

“Most shots on record (since 1966) at a single edition of the FIFA World Cup without creating a single chance for a teammate: Cristiano Ronaldo, 17,” OptaJoe on X revealed.

Previously, this record was held by Mexico’s Alberto Garcia Aspe, who had 15 shots on record during the 1998 FIFA World Cup.

This is yet another blemish on Ronaldo’s World Cup resume, as it’s unlikely that he returns for a seventh tournament in 2030.
