Crazy Mets and Phillies stat shows Dodgers’ spending isn’t as big of a deal as most make it originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Spending money in Major League Baseball typically makes a team at least average. Unfortunately for teams like the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies, that just really hasn't been the case this year.
On the flip side, I think this also goes to show just how good the Los Angeles Dodgers are.
Everybody wants to get upset at the Dodgers for spending money, and in a sense, I can understand the frustration, but the latest from ESPN's Jeff Passan really goes to show that spending money doesn't guarantee much anymore in this league.
“The three worst teams in baseball (Mets, Phillies, Astros) carry top 12 payrolls -- with two of them in the top five. In aggregate, the record of the top 12 is 185-179, which means the average of the dozen biggest payrolls in baseball is ... an 82-win team,” Passan wrote.
There are obviously other ways to look at all of this, and it isn't unfair to suggest that the Dodgers spend a lot more, as they do, but the grand scheme of things here is that spending money doesn't equal a thing.
The Mets, Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and many others have found that out the hard way. We have to give credit to Andrew Friedman and the roster he's been able to put together. He might have a lot of money to spend, but other teams do too, and he's done a really good job of ensuring that the contracts he gives out, even if they're expensive, are good ones.
