Brandon Young grew up around Houston, and on Sunday he walked into Daikin Park and pitched like a man completely at ease.
The right-hander threw seven innings of one-run baseball in a 5-2 win over the Astros, finishing off a three-game sweep and stretching Baltimore's winning streak to seven, its longest run since September 2023.
The victory moved the Orioles to 49-51 and within two games of the final American League wild card spot, a position that felt out of reach earlier in the summer.
Once it ended, his manager could not hide how much he enjoyed watching the whole thing unfold.
"B.Y. was outstanding today. Our pitching staff as a whole had one walk," Craig Albernaz said. "It was a really fun outing to watch him do his thing."
Young struck out seven and walked one on 95 pitches, improving to 8-2 with a 3.25 ERA across 91.1 innings this season.
He even opened the game with some improvisation, deflecting a comebacker off his foot to himself for the out, a play Albernaz called a little hacky-sack move.
"It was pretty cool. Good way to start the game," Young said. Pitching close to home clearly agreed with him too. "Just feels comfortable, I guess. Nostalgic," he said. "No knock on Camden, but I enjoy throwing here for sure."
Coby Mayo supplied the insurance with a solo homer in the sixth, his 13th of the season, and the young slugger came away convinced the streak has room to grow.
"I still think we've got more in us. I think there's a lot of versatility in this team, a lot of guys that can do a lot," Mayo said. "We didn't light up the hit column today, but we did enough."
The pitching has carried the streak more than the bats, since the staff issued only one walk all afternoon and Trevor Rogers has posted a 1.69 ERA over his last eight starts dating back to the start of June.
The lineup keeps finding contributors anyway, from Leody Taveras and his two-run single to Tyler O'Neill, who won Saturday's game with an eleventh-inning infield single after a stretch that had raised questions about how much Baltimore leans on him.
The schedule offers no breather, because the Orioles open at Fenway Park on Monday night against a Red Sox team riding a 13-game winning streak of its own.

Health behind the plate is the one worry, since Adley Rutschman sat Sunday with left wrist discomfort and Samuel Basallo exited after one at-bat with a lingering right shoulder issue, leaving Basallo's versatile bat worth monitoring as the biggest series of the season so far begins.
