Stop us if you’ve heard this before, there appears to be a disconnect between the Dallas Cowboys and a star player looking for a new contract. In this new saga, the drama is from wide receiver George Pickens' and the franchise tag.
Right before the draft kicked off Thursday, it was reported that Pickens had signed the franchise tag tender which would pay him $27.3 million this season. That meant the star WR would either play for the Cowboys this season, or it could allow the team to trade him.
The Cowboys waited until the seventh round to address the receiver position, and Pickens wasn’t traded. Soon after the reports he had signed the tender on Thursday evening, the reports were amended to state that Pickens intended to sign the tag.
But at the first offseason workout for the Cowboys on Monday, Pickens was a no-show. Not shocking, but the bigger news followed quickly, Pickens has still not signed his tag.
And just like that, a contract situation with the Cowboys and a player threatens to get messy, again.

Pickens doesn’t have to report since the workouts are currently voluntary, and not many people believed he would show up, but the expectation was also that Pickens had signed his tag.
This could mean nothing, but considering how the Cowboys and contracts go, it could also be a big deal. Could this be a move by Pickens and agent David Mulugheta to get the organization back to bargaining table? Just a handful of days after Stephen Jones showed his hand and announced the team would no longer be negotiating with Pickens, the WR and his representatives answered back.
Cowboys fans shouldn’t panic yet, as far as anyone knows, Pickens’ intent is still to sign the tag. There’s been no evidence to the contrary.
Yet, with Jerry and Stephen Jones, any outcome is on the table.
New year, same story, the Cowboys and a star player appear to be heading in opposite directions. The hope is that Pickens will eventually sign the franchise tag and play another season with the Cowboys.
Unlike how it seemed last week, that outcome is now in doubt.
