FRISCO - Von Miller is now officially on the record regarding his desire to sign with his hometown Dallas Cowboys.
And per two sources who've spoken to CowboysRoundtable.com about the concept ... the team is now officially on the record with its response.
Which is ... a polite "not interested at this time.''
Miller is destined for the Hall of Fame, but as he wraps up his career, the 37-year-old also hopes he is destined for a DFW homecoming.
“I grew up here in Dallas ... I’ve always had a special place in my heart for the Dallas Cowboys,'' he said in an interview this week with RJ Ochoa. "If I played for the Dallas Cowboys this year I … I only have to drive 20 minutes to work. ... This would be the first time that my mom and dad don’t have to fly to every single game.
"My kids are here. My family is here, girlfriend is here. Everybody’s here. ... I would I would love to play for the Dallas Cowboys and it’d be amazing.”
This idea has long been openly discussed by the DeSoto native and Texas A&M product. And a hookup with his hometown Cowboys has over the years been discussed by the team as well.
But in the wake of the presently unemployed Miller having just posted on social media a photo of himself in a Cowboys uniform, an official and updated response from the club is merited.
And it is our impression that the free agent Miller - even though he had nine sacks last year for the Commanders - is not really on the radar here.
"I'm not on my last flame,'' Miller recently said, and that may be so. Those nine sacks would've led the Dallas defense a year ago. "I don't want to pat myself on the back, but at 37 years old, I can still roll out the bed and still rush the quarterback. I'm still a great guy in the locker room, I bring great energy, I make sure everybody is ready to go."
In the case of the Cowboys, well aware that Miller is a two-time Super Bowl champion and the MVP of Super Bowl 50? They are planning on leaning on Rashan Gary, Donovan Ezeiruaku and rookie Malachi Lawrence to lead the edge-rush charge.
Maybe things change at training camp, depending on how certain Cowboys perform.
And if things do change? Dallas wouldn't need Von Miller to be the player he was in Denver. ... back in the days when Von and the Cowboys had their big-money flirtations.
The Cowboys would simply need him to be the player he was in Washington last season.
But for now? Let's put this way, way on the back burner.
