FRISCO - We explained the Dallas Cowboys' thoughts regarding a Nick Chubb signing rumor a week ago. ... a view that was both sourced, and in our view, logical.
And now NFL Network is confirming our story.
Dallas signed Miles Sanders and Javonte Williams in free agency. Both guys have been NFL starters. And the Cowboys then added Jaydon Blue and Phil Mafah on Day 3 of the NFL Draft. Both guys are now being penciled in for having roles as rookies.
So the key theme of the Cowboys' backfield in the coming months will be competition.
Where would veteran free agent Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns fit in?
He remains unsigned following the two biggest talent acquisition periods of the NFL offseason. ... and Chubb has been in the gym, posting some admittedly impressive footage of himself going through workouts.
But ...
Injuries have torn him down for the past two seasons. Chubb lost nearly all of his 2023 campaign after a gruesome leg injury and then last year, fighting his way back, he managed about 3 yards per carry.
He's a Cleveland favorite but it appears they have moved on with two running back draft selections of their own.
At this point, the backfield is crowded with four potential contributors already in the building. If Chubb is to return to an NFL backfield, ideally that means joining a team that has an apparent need for his services. ...
We said right after the Draft, "There's already likely going to be an odd man out from Sanders and Javonte and Blue and Mafah. There's no need here. There's no room at the inn.''
And now NFL.com, a week later, is writing that Chubb was "never in play.''
Which as our readers know ... is as true today as it was when we reported it a week ago.
