FRISCO - Brian Schottenheimer paused. And thought. For what seemed like a long time.

"Good question,'' the Dallas Cowboys coach finally responded when asked on Tuesday here inside The Star about what "has surprised you'' about getting to know trade get George Pickens.

And then "Schotty'' wisely asked the media to give him more time to learn about the newest star of "America's Team.''

"Wisely'' because there is so much to know about so many guys here.

Before that remark, Schottenheimer talked plenty about his orchestration of a Dallas culture that can help players ... including Pickens.

Said Schottenheimer of Pickens: “My time with him has been incredible.''

The coach talked of the research the Cowboys did before they finalized a trade for a player with a controversial behavioral background, the phone calls to folks back at the University of Georgia who know and "love'' the player.

We were all on board'' with the trade, he said. "I'm thrilled with the way the guys have responded to him ... We did our homework on GP; we don't have those concerns."

He talked with glee about the recent comments from CeeDee Lamb and Pickens about how there is no "No. 1 receiver'' here, and about how well the self-named "Goodfellas'' are getting along.

"I think CeeDee said it best: We don’t do A’s and B’s, or 1’s and 2’s,'' the coach said.

He talked about how thrilled he's been to watch Pickens work at OTAs, which continue through this week.

"He’s obviously a tremendous athlete,'' the coach said.

And then ... the big thing.

“We’re really excited about what he brings as a football player, but I see a guy that’s maturing,” Schottenheimer said. “I see a guy that we’re excited to put out there and watch him grow and get better.”

To put it politely, Pickens wear his emotions on his sleeve, and sometimes, that gets him and his team into trouble. He also comes here with a reputation from his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a guy who shows up late for meetings and even for games, an act that to his critics is a form of selfishness.

And yet the Cowboys are confident that Schottenheimer's culture can absorb all of that and help George navigate the tough times in 2025.

There is wisdom there from Schottenheimer, because it's true. From Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons all the way down to the 90th man on this offseason, there will be troubled times. So part of Schotty's plan is for players and coaches to get to know one another as men and as friends. ... so they can learn to "love'' each other, he said.

Part of that process: Free-throw contests.

Pickens vs. Schotty? "GP'' won two outta three.
