The countdown to kickoff continues and we are 86 days away from Longhorns football. As we’ve started this countdown, we’ve talked about breakout candidates, depth charts and predictions for the season. While those things are plenty important, it’s time to talk about what I believe could be the “championship difference” with this Texas team, and his name is Ryan Wingo.
This Texas team is one of the most talented teams in the country. They have the potential to be one of the best offenses and defenses in the country. One of the major reasons that can be said is Ryan Wingo’s efforts to bring Cam Coleman to Austin. Wingo became the main recruiter of Coleman early in the process and, despite likely losing his WR1 spot, was one of the main reasons Texas landed the Auburn star.
This team is adding more transfers, particularly to the starting 22, than ever before under Steve Sarkisian. There is no way for a team like this to come together without individuals like Wingo. Players that are willing to take a step back for the team to thrive. He’ll still be a major piece of the offense and could very well lead the team in receiving yards. However, if he does, it’ll be in part because of the Coleman addition. It’s a game changing addition that will help not only the Longhorns but likely Wingo.
Given the current state of college football, there is cynicism about what it takes for teams to win championships. The roster construction and approach is objectively different, but the DNA of a championship team has gone unchanged. It’s about having veteran leadership that truly believes in the idea of “team or individual”. Ryan Wingo being not only willing, but eager to add a WR that figures to take touches and spotlight from him is the best example of this.
This is not an uncommon thing with this team either. It was reported Arch Manning was not in the business of negotiating the highest NIL value, so Texas could be more aggressive in building a championship roster. There is no question that has been done. Now, it’s about reaching their potential. Ryan Wingo has gotten Texas much closer to that goal and it’s a selflessness that has to be present to hoist a trophy. If Texas does that this season, it’ll be not only because of the player Wingo is but the person he is as well.

One thing worth noting in Cam Coleman’s decision: Ryan Wingo. I was told Wingo was the lead recruiter, stayed in constant contact, and made it clear Coleman was wanted at Texas. Easy to protect your own turf - harder to build something bigger. That’s unselfish leadership. pic.twitter.com/qwolkXvz7Y

Cam Coleman & Ryan Wingo - Texas
• Coleman transfers over from Auburn and he's a Top 3 WR in #CFB. Wingo is already a proven star for the Longhorns and this duo could be the best in the Nation in 2026.
