We are 82 days away from the official start of the New Orleans Saints regular season. On Sunday, Sept. 13, the Saints will kick off their 2026 campaign with a road trip to face the Detroit Lions. As the Saints near training camp, tight end Treyton Welch wears No. 82 for the team.

A 2024 acquisition, Welch spent almost all of the last two years on the practice squad. He'll face even longer odds to make the Saints this year at a suddenly loaded tight end position. As our countdown to kickoff series continues, we'll take a closer look at Welch as our Saints Player of the Day.

  • Name (age): Treyton Welch (25)
  • Hometown: Buffalo, Minn.
  • Position: Tight end
  • Height, weight: 6-foot-4, 240 pounds
  • College: Wyoming Cowboys
  • Relative Athletic Score: 8.75
  • Drafted: Undrafted in 2024 (Cleveland Browns)
  • NFL experience: 2 years
  • 2026 salary cap hit: $1.01 million

Out of Buffalo High School in Minnesota, Welch wandered west collegiately to the University of Wyoming. He played sparingly in his first two years, catching only 5 passes in 13 game appearances. In 2021, Welch saw more action and had 19 receptions for 163 yards and 2 scores for the Cowboys. Welch had 308 receiving yards in both 2022 (22 catches) and 2023 (31 catches) while scoring a combined 7 touchdowns. He was second among Wyoming players in receiving yards in 2022 and second on the team in receptions during the 2023 campaign.

After not being selected in the 2024 NFL Draft, Welch was signed by the Cleveland Browns. In three preseason games, Welch caught 7 passes for 53 yards. Cleveland released him at the end of the preseason. New Orleans would promptly sign him to their practice squad. Welch remained on the Saints practice squad all that season and did not see any regular season action.

Last season, Welch was again released by New Orleans at the conclusion of training camp. He was again immediately re-signed to the practice squad. As like the previous two years, Welch was not expected to see any time on the active roster. However, he was promoted for a Week 3 matchup at Seattle and wound again get promoted for the last two games of the year. Welch did not have a catch or official target in any of the three games, appearing in a total of 16 offensive snaps and 21 more on special teams.

Welch again has a seemingly impossible battle to make the Saints 2026 active roster. Juwan Johnson returns as the starting tight end, with New Orleans also adding productive veteran Noah Fant and third round draft choice Oscar Delp to the position this offseason. Welch's best hope, it seems, will be to out perform the others on the tight end depth chart during training camp in hopes of likely being the fourth option at tight end.
