As the NBA’s 2026 free agency window approaches, Luka Doncic has expressed he wants the Los Angeles Lakers to acquire a star center this summer. This is a request Doncic has had since he first joined the team in February 2025.

“Luka’s first and foremost desire is an A-list center,” a source told ESPN.

ESPN’s Dave McMenamin listed multiple unrestricted free agents the Lakers could target this offseason to fulfill that spot on the roster.

“Among the unrestricted free agents who would slot well alongside Doncic, Detroit’s Tobias Harris, Miami’s Norman Powell, Chicago’s Anfernee Simons, New York’s Mitchell Robinson, Charlotte’s Coby White, Philadelphia’s Quentin Grimes, Cleveland’s Dean Wade and New York’s Landry Shamet all fit L.A.’s needs to varying degrees,” McMenamin wrote.

The Lakers will also have to consider the franchise’s future with DeAndre Ayton and Jaxson Hayes.

Ayton was Los Angeles’ starting center this season and now has an $8.1 million player option he must exercise before June 29 before he becomes an unrestricted free agent. Meanwhile, Hayes is now eligible to represent Slovenia alongside Doncic and is also set to enter unrestricted free agency this summer.

Lakers Could Target Reigning NBA Champion

One of the potential centers McMenamin connected to the Lakers is reigning NBA champion, Mitchell Robinson. Robinson was the backup center for the New York Knicks behind six-time NBA All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns.

Robinson has spent all eight seasons of his career with the Knicks after the franchise drafted him in the second round in 2018. This season, Robinson averaged 5.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 0.9 assists while shooting 72.3% from the field in 19.6 minutes per game.

During the Knicks’ NBA Finals run, Robinson averaged 3.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

According to NBA insider Jake Fischer, the Lakers are connected to Robinson but he is reportedly open to remaining in a smaller role and returning to the Knicks in free agency.

If the Lakers can work out a deal with Robinson, he would be a strong addition to the team’s defense next season.
