It's no secret that the Golden State Warriors are going to go big game hunting this summer. The front office appears to be committed to finding a winning formula around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Therefore, Mike Dunleavy Jr will likely be tasked with keeping tabs on any star that could potentially become available ahead of next season.
According to Kevin O'Connor of Yahoo Sports, now could be the perfect time to check in on Kawhi Leonard's availability. After all, the Los Angeles Clippers recently began pivoting toward a younger, faster and more athletic roster build. Landing the fifth pick in the upcoming draft will likely embolden them as they continue to restructure their current rotation.
"Could the fifth pick mean a Kawhi Leonard trade is on the table? The Warriors made a run at Leonard prior to the trade deadline," O'Connor wrote. "The Clippers refused. But league sources expect the Warriors to be aggressive in pursuing a star player via trade this summer. With a chance to take a young guy in the lottery, maybe now the Clippers would be willing to listen. The front office should. This team is no longer a contender. The window shut. It’s time to move on to the new era."
Leonard will be entering the final year of his current contract next season. He's set to earn $50.3 million. Golden State would likely need to part with Jimmy Butler in order to make the money work. Nevertheless, there's no denying that a healthy and motivated Kawhi would take the Warriors to the next level, especially as there's no telling when Butler will return from injury, or what level he'll be playing at.
Still, Dunleavy may balk at Leonard's limited availability in recent years. If that's the case, a deal may be a non-starter. But, if the Warriors are looking to make a big swing, they don't come much bigger than landing Kawhi. Therefore, it's likely Golden State will at least check the Clippers temperature on a possible trade.
