The Minnesota Vikings are in need of defensive tackle help after releasing Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave to begin free agency. Minnesota could address the need in the draft, but it could make an immediate impact with a trade for one of the league's most disruptive interior linemen.

New York Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence officially requested a trade on Monday, per Adam Schefter. The two sides haven't been able to reach a new deal in the past three offseasons. Lawrence said he won't participate in offseason activities without a resolution.

Could the Vikings acquire Lawrence in a trade? They likely have enough draft capital, with four of the top 97 picks. In that sense, they do have the assets to obtain him.

But does Minnesota have the money to fit Lawrence on the roster? Per OverTheCap, the Vikings only have $4.826 million in cap space in 2026. Lawrence has a cap number of $26.958 million this season.

The Giants have $6.49 million in cap space and haven't gotten a deal done. So could Minnesota realistically make it work?

A trade would almost require New York to take on some of Lawrence's money. Then, interim GM Rob Brzezinski, whose expertise is in cap management, would be tasked with either spreading some of the money into 2027 and beyond.

Of course, this is all assuming Jonathan Greenard is still on the roster. This trade would be easier to pull off with Greenard off the books.

If the Vikings somehow acquire Lawrence, they would have a potential game-changing force on the interior of the defensive line. He won't be 29 until November, and he was rated the league's top interior defensive lineman by PFF in 2022 and 2023, before finishing second in 2024. If he bounced back, Minnesota's defensive line could become even more ferocious.

The potential hold-up still comes down to money. If Lawrence wanted a new deal with the Giants, he'd be expecting one with the Vikings. A trade feels unlikely, but if Brzezinski pulls it off, Brian Flores would have another weapon at his disposal.
