Out at the New York Giants' headquarters in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Joe Schoen is preparing for his fifth NFL draft as the team's general manager. The first four weren't bad, but the team has not improved in the standings.
That has led the organization to reshuffle its power structure and business model. Schoen has been stripped of some of his duties and his authority, basically reducing him to a glorified scout status.
With the real power lying in the hands of first-year head coach John Harbaugh and Senior VP of Football Operations and Strategy, Dawn Aponte, Schoen could be on the hot seat come the draft, which is just a tad over two weeks away.
The Giants, after finishing 9-7-1 with a playoff appearance in 2022, Schoen's first season, have compiled a record of 13-38 since. Only the Tennessee Titans (12-39) have been worse.
But brighter days could be ahead. Veteran NFL reporter Matt Lombardo believes "a window to compete for multiple Super Bowls in the years to come may be cracking open," but Schoen has to nail this draft to save his Giants' career.
It's going to be a daunting task for Schoen, who only has two picks in the top 100 to work with. After No. 5 overall, the Giants select again at the top of Round 2 (No. 37 overall), but then don't get another bite at the apple until Saturday afternoon.
They have five picks in Rounds 4-6, and this is where Schoen is going to have to shine. But, as Lombardo states above, he has no margin for error.

Schoen can’t afford to blow this.
Beyond infusing young talent at the top of the board with the No. 5 overall pick, to lift this year’s roster, Schoen has effectively been banished to the draft wing at the team’s headquarters, on equal footing with Harbaugh in terms of who reports to owner John Mara.
If, in his new capacity, overseeing the scouting department with Harbaugh and Aponte running the rest of the operation, Schoen swings and misses in this year’s draft, he may be cleaning out his office before he has the chance to scout next year’s class.
